Album
Anime, Trauma and Divorce by Open Mike Eagle
The drums feel like they were played by an orchestra section rather than programmed in a DAW. The synths sound like they were taken from fish playing electronic violins underwater.
Film
Clemency directed by Chinonye Chukwu
Clemency is a painfully striking film, as the narrative largely elongates the predetermined fate of inmates on death row. The plot of the film lies outside of any character’s control, as systematic forces drive every pivot point, from the appeal to the execution process. Woodard’s performance as a warden projects an icy coldness that can only be radiated from someone who believes it is easier to be numb than to feel.
Book
Armenian Popular Songs by Ghevont Alishan
Even amid the glorious depictions, his poetry reflects the growing anti-Armenian sentiments within the Ottoman Empire. Published in the 1860s, Alishan’s work is being produced at a time where the persecution of Armenians is becoming more prevalent as massacres amount, leading up to the 1915 Genocide.
