Album
Anjelitu by Homeboy Sandman
Sandman’s style is both a throwback and a lurch forward. He raps with the flow of a 90s legend like Slick Rick, but covers topics that most rappers today wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole. This creates a constant push and pull between the conventional and the bizarre.
Film
Homeroom directed by Peter Nicks
Peter Nicks’ Homeroom is a fresh time capsule of the 2019-2020 school year and serves as a reinvigorating look into the vibrancy of high school life, especially for kids who carry hope for the future despite having unfavorable circumstances that they can’t control. The documentary has something for every young person who might have found themselves moving towards a new chapter over the last two years — and the way the pandemic has remolded their stories.
Book
Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson
The queer, coming-of-age Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse is based on the Greek myth of Herakles who, when completing his tenth labor, killed the three-bodied giant Geryon and stole his cattle. The story is most often told from the perspective of Herakles. Though Stesichoros, a Greek lyric poet, was the first to tell it from Geryon’s in Geryoneis (The Geryon Matter). Carson uses Stesichoros as a base for her novel, attempting to fill the gaps of the fragmented Geryoneis.
