Album
Thumbing Thru Foliage by YUNGMORPHEUS
Listening to YUNGMORPHEUS feels like gliding along on a sailboat as the police shoot at you from a distant shore. Everything feels blissful until you start to look around and notice the bullets whizzing by, inches away from your face. But the bullets are always a little too slow to ever take down your little boat. So, even as the world around you consumed in chaos, you can sit back and enjoy the ride. YUNGMORPHEUS’ newest album, Thumbing Thru Foliage, a collaboration with the NYC-based producer ewonee, perfects this complex vibe and YUNGMORPHEUS shows once again why he’s one of the most essential voices in rap.
Film
Lover’s Rock directed by Steve McQueen
Watching Steve McQueen’s Lover’s Rock during lockdown unlocks a particular craving — a want to be light on your feet again, dancing to music in a slightly stuffy room with strangers who enjoy each other’s company. The majority of the film’s brief 68-minute run-time is set in a 1980s reggae house party in West London and highlights the story of two budding lovers, as well as the underlying spits and tensions that underpin the night throughout the film.
Book
Discourse on Colonialism by Aimé Césaire
Aimé Césaire is one of the most influential figures, developing significant anti-colonial literature and movements. Discourse on Colonialism is a manifesto that dissects the meaning of the “third world” and describes the impacts of colonialism on both the colonizer and colonized. The content and structure of Césaire’s work are both so riveting and active, it summons the collective consciousness of all colonized and oppressed peoples.
